The leaves are changing colors, the air is cool and crisp, and the outside environment feels inviting. Fall is a perfect time of the year to take advantage of the weather by getting outdoors and taking part in your favorite physical activity.

While summer is usually too hot and winter too cold for exercising outside, autumn provides us with an ideal opportunity to get active. You may still need some extra clothing to keep your temperature regulated, but the cool fall air works wonders once you start to build up a sweat.

That’s why we encourage you to strap on your shoes and get busy with your favorite fall physical activity during this prime time of the year. Whether you enjoy taking a brisk walk, a long jog or bike ride, or a hike through your local park, there are few better times to do these things then now. Here are a few quick tips to help you get the most out of your activity-of-choice this autumn:

  • Dress in layers, especially when it’s on the colder side, and shed each layer as your body warms
  • Since the days are shorter, try exercising earlier in the day
  • Also be sure to wear reflective clothing or lighting when exercising in the dark
  • Look for opportunities to walk more whenever you can; for example, if you’re waiting to pick your kids up from practice and you have extra time, go for a short walk rather than staying in the car

Developing an exercise routine now can also help you establish habits to continue throughout winter. So what are you waiting for? Get out there any enjoy all that autumn has to offer while you still can.
